sw_pc_wi_p2: Multi-IM shootout between Trillian, Gaim/Pidgin and Miranda

Being a long time trillian and linux user, friends continuously hound me to look at other options such as gaim/pidgin. Finally under the pressure I decided to give them a shot, here is what I found:

Trillian:

Being a long time user I have come to use this as the defacto standard for Multi-IM clients. While there are the occasional problems where AIM will always change their protocol to keep Trillian users out of their network, the guys at Trillian always get it back usually in a day. Very impressive. Pros and Cons:

+ Setting a custom away message
+ Ability to see all users whether online or not
+ Setting timestamps on in the chat window to know when messages arrive
+ Supports last time seen on-line, a feature I use often

- Professional version is not free
- Limited number of protocols (only majors AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, IRC)
- Does not immediately put you away when locking the computer

Trillian: http://www.trillian.cc

Pidgin (formally GAIM):

In latest rankings this has come in at #2 among users. I loaded this up and found install and setup to be straight forward. I played with it for a while and found it to be more lightweight than Trillian. Pros and Cons:

+ Supports most number of protocols including Google Talk and Sametime (15+ total)
+ Light-weight

- Problem joining MSN chats, which was a show stopper for me
- Not clear on which network buddies are on without mousing over buddy
(for example Trillian puts colored dots next to each to show network and status)
- Offline users are not displayed

Pidgin: http://pidgin.im

Miranda:

Multi-IM users rate this as the #1 client. However it must be hype that many people claim this is number one. The reason is that Miranda by far has the least features in it. It is tiny in size and resources making it the most light-weight of the bunch. Pros and Cons:

+ Offers good number of protocols including Jabber (10+ total)
+ Most light-weight of all

- Very limited feature set
- No last time on support
- No emoticons!

Miranda: http://www.miranda-im.org

Meebo:

Dont forget when your out and dont want to install any client Meebo turns your web brower into a multi-im client. Good for on the go. See our previous story on it here:

sw_em_ce: Use nuTsie to play iTunes music on your high-speed 3G cell

If you are sporting around town with a high-speed 3G equipped cell-phone and use iTunes then this is for you. nuTsie uses java-enabled phones to run the cell application, so check for your phone support.

The way it works is like this:

- You register for a nuTsie account.

- Next you export your iTunes library information and upload the XML file to their site.

- nuTsie will then parse out all of the artists, albums, songs, and play lists from your library and make the songs available on their website or when you login via your cell-phone. NOTE: This can take hours depending on your library.

When streaming to your phone the buffering only takes a second or two and the quality is very good.

A few drawbacks currently are that you cannot delete anything once added, play anything other than a play list or full shuffle.

Bottom line its a decent app and FREE.

MaxiVista is similar to synergy except it can do a few extras including just duplicating your current display to a number of others. It can also let you make one big screen by chaining screens together to make one big desktop. You can copy paste from one window to the other sharing the clipboard. While this is not free it is only $30.

Check out the demo here:

This is one of the coolest apps to come out in a while. Synergy allows you to run a client/server application between two or more machines. On the master machine you specify where on the screen you will activate another computer. When you mouse over to that edge of the screen your mouse will appear on the other computers monitor and you can use your keyboard and mouse from the first computer to control it. This software does not allow for running headless computers but allows you to cluster a whole bunch of monitors around you and control all the computers from one keyboard and mouse and not have to switch to each like a KVM requires.

It is similar to remote desktop except you can use multiple monitors connected the different machines and literally control them from the same keyboard and mouse on all the machines. In fact you can do this with Windows, Linux, and Mac computers since it is platform neutral. Very cool and the best part its FREE.

sw_pc_li: Recording Audio streams and Listening to them in iTunes
Posted by tiplabs Notice: Undefined variable: timezone in /home/tiplabs/public_html/themes/ExtraLite/theme.php on line 107 on Sunday, March 11 @ 12:07:28 EDT (13689 reads)
Topic tiplabs tech tip
We have mentioned recording XM satellite radio MP3s in the past

http://www.tiplabs.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=101

but that requires still a subscription to XM radio and the purchase of hardware. However with the large list of internet music broadcasters out there there is a large amount of free music for your listening pleasure. Some folks will go and buy an expensive Denon receiver and grab those streams and listen to them as they like. However you dont get a copy of the songs to listen to later.

Streamripper is an open source (GPL) application that lets you record streaming audio directly to your hard drive. It will allow you to record streaming internet radio stations automatically and store off the title and artist of each MP3 to your hard drive. When you come back after it runs for hours you will see your music collection increase drastically. If you get into this it will start to make sense to get a home NAS eventually.

One implementation we are going to discuss here is using the linux version of streamripper (there is a windows version) and storing off the music and then allowing you to broadcast it to iTunes. This is something that works well in a work environment where many folks can just start listening to music that has been piling up overnight.

Grab a copy of Streamripper here:

http://streamripper.sourceforge.net

Next install it on your favorite linux box. One internet music streaming location we use is Radio Paradise. Here is a sample bash script to start it up with that radio station:

===== START CUT ======
#!/bin/bash

URL="http://www.radioparadise.com/musiclinks/rp_128.m3u"
DIR="/export/streams"
DURATION_HOURS=8
DURATION_SECS=$[60*60*$DURATION_HOURS]
MAX_MEGS=1024

streamripper $URL -d $DIR -l $DURATION_SECS -M $MAX_MEGS &
===== END CUT ======
This script will start recording all the music played from Radio Paradise for 8 hours (good for running during the night at the office to not use critical bandwidth during office hours). It will also store off just 1GB of music. Simply setup a cron job to run this every night to get a nice collection of music for everyone at the office the following day. What you will get is in your /export/streams directory a collection of .mp3 files with artists and title set in the tags. This may be sufficient for most folks however we have determined that some music we could do without and dont want it even shared. So we have another script that runs at 7am to clean up the music directory and deletes unwanted artists. Also it is important to note that streamripper will put duplicates into an 'incomplete' directory, so it is easy to delete any duplicate songs. This script is written in perl so you may need to install perl if you dont already have it.

Finally now that you have your MP3s all nice in one location you setup iTunes to share your files. Here are the steps for doing this in iTunes:

* Open iTunes preferences.
* Select the check box "Share my Music" and select a library that you created using the directory of your streamripper songs into.
* Change the shared name to whatever you like.
* If you want to password protect the share, select "Require password" and put in a password.

Final comments
--------------
There is also a winamp plugin for streamripper that will allow you to store streams to file as well which is handily. Here is a tutorial on that here:

en: Charter pay-per-view is unencrypted

Topic tiplabs tech tip
Depending on the area you are in many charter subscribers accidentally figured out pay-per-view is unencrypted.

This means for a good time you can one evening have your TV or DVR scan the RF for NEW channels.
Simply use the DVR or TV to scan all the RF frequencies at random times and it will lock on other peoples pay-per-view channels. It will find a bunch of new ones that have active pay-per-view channels currently streaming and you can watch them for free. You can watch their show at the same time they do.

You will not be able to watch whatever pay-per-view show you want, you will just be able to see what others have paid for and watching. You also will want to do this often to pick up other pay-per-view streams that started. You will be surprised to find many of your neighbors are watching a lot of adult content.

There have been many internet speed testing sites out there and still one of my favorite that many major cable MSOs use is toast.net:

http://performance.toast.net

However a new king takes the crown. Speedtest.net reworked their site with amazing flash. This is very cool.

sw_em_dv: Galleon TiVo App in Maintence but still impressive

One of the better 3rd party applications out there is Galleon. This software has features including playing MP3s, viewing photos, album covers, streaming music from shoutcast stations, iTunes playlists, view local weather forecasts, internet webcams, email, RSS feeds, podcasts, view local movie listings, videocasts, local upcoming events, local traffic conditions, user customizable skins, IM using Jabber, and more.

Many of these features now are incorporated in TiVos home media and TiVoToGo. However there are still many that are not covered. Worth a check out.

First it was free P2P files with Kaaza, next free phone service with Skype, now its free television with Joost. These guys have big marketing clout so you will be hearing much more on this in the future. They are working to get you free TV watching so beware video providers.
