Get 98+Mbps on a 100Mbps ethernet card:
The fact of the matter is not all ethernet cards are the same. If you
ever tried to do an FTP transfer on two machines direct with a cross-over
cable and got 50Mbps max even after windows tweaks your not alone.
Bottom line is that some ethernet cards will perform much better than
others if there are some settings that can be tweaked. The cheap cards
will not give you the max throughput they claim.
To get real performance there are three things you can do to achieve
serious performance:
1) Get a Intel Ethernet Express Pro/100 Ethernet Adapter. This bad boy
has the ability to set the receive buffers in the card to 1024. Here is
how you configure it:
To set the number of receive buffers, in XP you "simply" go
Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device
Manager->Network Adapters->right click on the Intel Ethernet Express
Pro->Properties->Advanced Tab->Receive Buffers and set the text box to
1024.
2) You need to set the windows TCP window sizes to much larger settings.
TCP windows are the buffers that data is stored into during send and
receive operations. The problem is if you do lots of data and have small
windows it will require many ACKs and throttle the FTP server often as
well as use more valuable upstream data. Larger windows mean less ACKs and
less upstream so the FTP server can just stream the data faster. To
change you TCP window size use this easy to use application "TCP
Optimizer". Grab it here:

3) You can increase speeds even more using Windows RAM disks. TCP uses
throttling to tell the sender to stop of the receiver is busy. This can
happen if your hard disk is writing. RAM disks wont have this problem.
There are many free RAM disk apps out there and even Microsoft has a free
one but its limited to 64MB. Here is where you get that one:
