Tech Tips From Tech Experts

This is a special report that goes into detail on how to take your stand alone series 2 tivo and add the following to it:

1) Put your tivo on the network and off the phone line
2) Building a serial debug cable for access
3) Increase your drive space up to 137MB
4) Add telnet access
5) Add ftp access
6) Add web server allowing you to remotely control the tivo
7) And more

Before you do this you need the following items in hand:

1) A Torx 10 and 15 driver
2) A Linksys WUSB11 USB Wireless adapter (or wired if preferred)
3) A 120GB or 160GB HD to upgrade to (only 137 used or 120 hours)
4) At least 4 GB hard drive formatted to FAT32 file system, you will use most likely about 1GB of this
5) A 1/8" stereo audio jack 20\' extension cord and a female DB9 connector
6) Watch all your currently recorded shows and wipe out your now playing
list as this hack will not transfer over your existing recordings

=======================================

PROCEDURE
=========
1) First it is recommended you watch all the shows currently on your Tivo as none of them will be saved from this procedure, only the settings. There are additional procedures which we will not go into here if you really need to backup all your video streams as well.

2) Setup your WIFI. You need to disconnect the phone line and hookup your new USB WIFI box. Make sure you have downloaded the latest version which should be 4.0.

3) Using the T-10 driver take off the back screws of the tivo and slide the lid off.

NOTE: At the bottom there is a link that has pictures on how to do this as well under "INSTALLING THE DRIVES".

IMPORTANT: Once open be VERY careful not to touch the white ribbon cable, if this comes loose it will make your tivo useless and you will be very sorry.

4) You will next need to use the T-15 driver to remove the 2 screws holding on the drive bracket. Disconnect the drive power and IDE connector cable and take the drive out of the tivo.

5) Download the sleeper iso from here: http://www.pvrfiles.com/tsfiles. The file you want is called tivoscripts1_02.zip (yeah its not called sleeper). This will automatically backup and install all the hacks needed to get many of the above features using your PC. After downloading it, burn the CDR with the iso image, this is a self booting CD.

6) Now it is important to have the hard drives physically hooked up in the system properly as it does the backups based on this. Here is the order:

FAT32 HD = primary master
CDROM = primary slave
TIVO ORIG = secondary master

7) Now put the CD in and boot the system and have it boot off the CD (may need to select the BIOS to do this).

You should be able to select all the defaults on the install and it will do all the work for you. After it will ask you to shutdown and put the new big HD (120 or 160) into the system and reboot with CD.

TIVO NEW HD = secondary master

8) The restore will then occur and all the utils will get installed. When this is done you are ready to put it back into the tivo.

9) Finally you should make the console/serial cable to see if anything goes wrong. See the instructions below under "CABLE HOWTO INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONSOLE PORT".

10) Now everything should boot up and you will have the extra drive space available, telnet and ftp online.

11) Finally you need to install tivowebplus and mfsftp.

That should do it, there are a few other hacks that will come later but this is the base you need to get rolling first.

Here is also a .pdf that talks about the same install:
