Web 2.0 is Exploding with AJAX
I am sure you have all heard of Web 2.0, but many may not know exactly
what it is. While many may say its new sites like digg.com or
myspace.com, etc. These web sites are excellent and innovative,
however they are just the latest popular websites and business ideas on
the internet.
Web 2.0 however involves a new technology that is changing they way
sites are being designed and more importantly how we do computing in the future.
The foundation of Web 2.0 is AJAX. AJAX is not a new language however, it
is just the combination of a few existing technologies that when put
together form a powerful solution.
AJAX is shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Get more details
from Wiki here:

Currently two big players have the vision in the future that AJAX will be
the driver that allows the 1997 Sun Microsystems idea of Network
Appliances. They are Google and Microsoft. The thought that eventually
everyone will only need a machine with a web browser is not new. However
the driver for it previously was Java. Netscape and Sun teamed to make
this happen with their cross-platform concept. It bombed, Java had too
many problems including poor performance.
However now AJAX has been proven with a host of small companies
developing office applications and virtual operating systems. Google has
already purchased one company that develops and AJAX word processor
Writely.
There are some pretty interesting AJAX applications out there right now.
Lets check out the current top solutions:
Office Application Suite with an Operating System
=================================================
AJAX Launch offers a complete suite of products which include
operating system, word processor, spreadsheet, image editor, music
player, and video/photo/music editor.

Collborative Task List
======================
This has got to be one of the best AJAX apps in my opinion. I actually
was looking for something like this not long ago. A collaborative to-do
list that has hooks into Google maps. This is a must see of all these
apps if you only look at one.

Web Page Editor
===============
This is a WYSIWYG web page creation application. It is designed to be
used by providers to let their customers make their own web pages
themselves.

If the Web 2.0 applications continue to mushroom as they appear to be
today. It should be safe to say that in the future we wont need our PCs
built for anything except gaming. That even may be taken away by
the latest game console (eg- Xbox360, PS3, etc). However it may be in the
near future that web appliances return with just a machine with a web
browser and lots of RAM to do all your meat and potatoes computer work.
It will be like the return of the electronic word processor.
